Directbuy

I just read somewhere that in home furnishings sales, stores get like a gross margin of 43.3% profit, on average. That is freaking ridiculous.

DirectBuy is the leading members-only showroom and design center that offers merchandise at manufacturer-direct prices. They charge a membership fee, but then you can buy the products at manufacturer prices. I should look into doing something like this before I sink any more money into decorating.

DirectBuy only carry top-of-the-line items. Their price tag is often still much higher after discount, esp. if you compare it to price tag of mid-range household appliances, cabinetry etc.

darn i don't think i am explaining this correctly but what i meant is:

say you want a mid-range GE fridge. At home depot the price range is around $1200. You go to directbuy, they have high-end stainless steel Viking fridge for $5000 but with 50% off. So even at 50% off, the directbuy fridge is still about $1300 more than what a regular fridge goes for, or what you want to pay for.

(brands and prices mentioned above are just examples)

also, the membership is REALLY REALLY pricey, and has to be renewed annually.

Before you pursue DirectBuy, check out what other people have to say about it: http://www.infomercialscams.com/scams/direct_buy_scams

Many, many years ago in the days BC (before kids) my husband and I went to one of these direct-purchase places to check it out. To say that you are *pressured* to join is an understatement. Whew! We did not join and they were NOT nice about our decision. We chalked it up to a lesson learned --- and we escaped without spending any more than a couple hours one afternoon.

i would like to add that my manager and her husband has directbuy account for years now and loves it.

they are updating their entire house... er... or should I say mansion, and she buys furniture and stuff from there,. Because they buy only the best, top of the line products, the directbuy membership is def. worth it for them.

I would like to tell you the reality of what has been promised vs the reality.

Here is my recent purchase of my fridge:

Our fridge broke. So, we are shopping for a new one. We went to DirectBuy member site to search all the available styles and price. My research indicates that only 24-30% savings are gained when buying the fridge model we want from Direct Buy.

The 29-30% savings is calculated based on MSRP (normally higher than the listed price quoted at Future Shop, Corbeil, or Leon). Only HomeDepot uses the MSRP in the listed price.

    So, here is the calcualtion:

The model was want to buy is:

MSRP: $2399 (Future Shop sells in for $1799 and HomeDepot sells it for $2399)

    DirectBuy price: $1583
    Add 8% Handling Fee: $127
    Sub-Total: $1710 (30% savings)

Price after 5% GST: $1796 (no need to pay PST before July 30/08 for Energy Efficient fridge)

    Add $50 delivery charges: $1846
    vs.
    Future Shop: $1799+5%GST+$50 delivery= $1940

    This is only $94 savings.

So, I paid annual membership fee of $199 + few thousand initial membership fee. I am an idiot to have join DirectBuy.
